Name: Iris Rios
Birthday: November 3
Hometown: Queretaro, Mexico. I moved to the US (Arlington) almost 5 years ago.
What is your athletic background? Did you play any sports growing up?
“Growing up, swimming was my favorite sport, and I also played soccer. In high school, I started getting into running.”
When did you attend your first workout with Arlington Sports Conditioning, and how did you first learn about the group?
“Back in May 2024, I joined a Saturday workout. I found out about it from a promo email my apartment building sent out. It sounded cool since it was an outdoor training session nearby, so I thought, why not give it a shot?”
What is your proudest athletic accomplishment, and why?
“When I ran my first marathon. It was incredible to cross the finish line and realize I could do something I never thought possible. I felt so proud after all those days of training. I think that feeling is what keeps you signing up for more races. So far, I’ve run three marathons.”
What is your favorite exercise(s)?
“Turf relays, planks, and I’m starting to like push-ups!”
What is your favorite workout song or musical artist?
“Can’t Stop by Red Hot Chili Peppers and Lose Yourself by Eminem”
What is your favorite sports team?
“I’m a huge soccer fan! Besides cheering for my favorite Mexican team, Chivas, I’m a big Barcelona supporter. Plus, I grew up watching the MLB Playoffs, so now I’m rooting for the Nats!”
Who is your favorite athlete?
“My siblings! I’m the youngest of three siblings and definitely the least active. I have always admired how discipline they are -seriously, I can’t remember a day when they did not work out. They are the ones that inspire me to get moving.”
Other than working out, how else do you like to spend your free time?
“Attending concerts, traveling, hanging out with friends, or putting together puzzles.”
What do you like best about Arlington Sports Conditioning?
“First off, it’s outdoors, so it gets me out of my apartment and I spend less time cooped up inside. Plus, with the mix of speed and strength workouts, I feel we’re hitting all the muscles and I can really see my fitness improving.”
What are the biggest benefits of being a member?
“Not only are you getting a fantastic workout, but you are also building a community. You start to feel a sense of belonging as everyone is so friendly and welcoming, making it easy to form new friendships along the way.”
What advice would you offer to new or prospective members of Arlington Sports Conditioning?
“Give both speed and strength workouts a shot. They’re easy to adjust to your level, and before you know it, you’ll be done and feeling accomplished!”
